Special Award 2006
Special Award: Whistleblowing Friendly Culture Award Supporter: Public Concern at Work www.pcaw.co.uk
Winner: SC Johnson
Great Place to Work® Institute UK, with the support of Public Concern at Work, is proud to present SC Johnson as this year’s winner of the Whistleblowing Friendly Culture Award. The award recognises that whistleblowing is now a key aspect of risk management and good corporate governance.
In selecting the winner, we looked for the organisation whose staff said they felt that whistleblowing on wrongdoing was both safe and accepted. So, in addition to assessing each organisation’s procedures for whistleblowing, we looked for organisations where a very high number of employees said that if they witnessed wrongdoing at work, they could raise the issue confident that the matter would be addressed. We then considered whether the following best practice requirements were met:
- Setting out a clear route to staff as to how concerns should be raised both internally and externally;
- Clearly distinguishing between whistleblowing concerns and grievances;
- Allowing staff to get independent advice on whistleblowing;
- Properly promoting the policy;
- Monitoring and assessing staff’s trust and confidence in the policy;
SC Johnson scored well against all these requirements. Their policy sends a strong message that victimisation against anyone raising a concern or taking part in an investigation will be a disciplinary offence. Importantly, SC Johnson showed a whistleblowing friendly culture by emphasising openness and accountability, particularly as the head of the company personally takes a strong lead on this and other governance procedures.
